Innerspring vs Memory Foam

Read the shape of it: innerspring wins bounce, cooling, edge support and price; memory foam wins motion isolation and pressure relief. But before you pick a side, it is worth saying plainly what the table cannot: almost no mattress sold today is a bare innerspring like the one in this comparison, because the market moved on from it.
Innerspring: bounce and breathability, on a thin cushion
A traditional innerspring is a connected coil core — the springs are linked to each other, not individually wrapped — with a comfort layer on top that is genuinely thin, often 2 inches or less of padding between you and the metal. That construction is exactly why innerspring earns its reputation: springs compress and push back fast, which produces the springy, responsive feel people associate with a classic bed, and the coil core is mostly open space, so air moves through it and the bed sleeps cool. It is also the least expensive construction to build, which is why it is still the budget-friendly default in a lot of showrooms.
Not all innerspring cores are built the same way, and the difference is worth knowing before you assume "innerspring" means one thing. Older Bonnell and offset-coil designs link every spring directly to its neighbours in a continuous wire helix, which is the cheapest way to build a coil core and also the version that transmits the most motion — roll over on one side and the whole surface feels it. Pocketed coils, individually wrapped in fabric and not directly connected to each other, cut that down noticeably. Neither eliminates the underlying problem, because the comfort layer sitting on top of either coil type is still thin. The coil type changes how much motion transfer you get; it does not change the pressure-relief story, which is decided almost entirely by that padding layer.
The costs trace back to that same thin comfort layer. Because there is not much padding between you and the coils, an innerspring conforms far less than foam does, so pressure points at the shoulder and hip show up more often. And because the coils are connected to each other, movement on one side of the bed travels to the other — a restless partner registers across the whole surface. The thin comfort layer is also usually the first part of the mattress to give out: it flattens or packs down within a few years even though the coil core underneath is often still structurally fine, which is why an innerspring can start to feel like a different, worse bed well before it is actually worn out.
Memory foam: the hug, the heat, and the trade that comes with it
Memory foam is viscoelastic foam — it softens with body heat and slowly molds around you rather than pushing back. That slow, close-contouring behavior is why it is the best-in-class material for two specific things: pressure relief, because it distributes your weight instead of concentrating it at your shoulder and hip, and motion isolation, because it absorbs a partner's movement into itself rather than transmitting it across the bed the way connected coils do.
The trade-off is the same property seen from the other side. Foam is a solid material that surrounds you, and solids insulate, so the same structure that makes the hug so deep also traps your body heat against you — memory foam sleeps warm, full stop, and gel or copper infusions only help at the surface for part of the night before they saturate. The slow response that feels like a cradle to some people feels like being stuck to others, since you sink into a shape and then have to work your way back out of it to change position.
There is also a weight consideration worth stating plainly: a heavier body compresses foam further, all the way down toward the firmer support foam underneath the softer comfort layers, and a bed that is not built with a dense enough base for that weight can start to feel like it has bottomed out — the hip and shoulder pressing past the cushioning to something noticeably firmer underneath. This is a support-core problem rather than a comfort-material verdict, and it is the same reason coil-based beds tend to be recommended more often for heavier sleepers: springs simply do not compress the same way foam does, and they do not run out of support the deeper you press into them.
The honest answer for most shoppers is neither — it is hybrid
Here is the thing this comparison leaves out if it stops at two options: nearly every mattress sold in a box today is either all-foam or a hybrid— a coil support core paired with a real, substantial foam or latex comfort system on top, not the thin padding a traditional innerspring uses. A bare innerspring, like the one in the table above, is genuinely becoming the minority option in the modern market, and for good reason: a hybrid keeps the coil core's bounce, cooling and edge support while adding enough foam on top to actually contour and absorb some motion, closing most of the gap that makes a plain innerspring the weakest of the three constructions for most people.
