Mattress Topper vs Mattress Pad

Buy a pad if the mattress feels right and you want a washable layer with a bit of extra softness - that is most people. Buy a topper if the mattress is genuinely too firm, because only two to four inches of foam will change how a bed feels. Neither one fixes a sagging mattress, and no listing will tell you that.

One is a layer. The other is a change

The two products sit next to each other on the same search results page and do fundamentally different jobs. The useful way to tell them apart is not thickness in inches but what each one is for:

  • A mattress pad is a thin quilted layer, usually well under an inch, that fits over the mattress like a fitted sheet. It washes in a home machine, it adds a little padding, and its real function is to keep wear, body oil and dust off the mattress while making a firm quilted surface slightly kinder.
  • A mattress topper is two to four inches of foam, latex or dense fiber that lies on top of the mattress. It cannot be washed, it is thick enough to change how far you sink, and its function is to make a bed that feels wrong feel right.

That one washable-versus-not distinction drives everything else. A pad is a consumable you launder with the sheets; a topper is a semi-permanent part of the bed that needs its own protection.

Diagnose the complaint, then buy

Almost every wrong purchase in this category comes from skipping this step. Four complaints, four different answers:

  1. "I want to keep the mattress clean." A protector first, then a pad if you also want padding. Neither a pad nor a topper is waterproof — that pair is a separate decision.
  2. "The bed is too firm." A topper, three inches, and you will need deeper sheets. A pad will not do it.
  3. "The surface feels a bit hard but the bed is fine." A pillow-top pad. This is the case people most often over-solve with a topper and then find the bed too soft.
  4. "There is a dip where I sleep." Neither. Read the next section.

The thing neither one fixes

A sagging mattress is a failure of support underneath, and anything you lay on top follows the dip. A topper over a sag gives you a softer version of the same hollow — which often makes back pain worse, because now your spine is unsupported and sinking. There is no product in this category that solves it.

The real options are a rigid layer underneath as a stopgap, a warranty claim if the depression meets the manufacturer's measured threshold, or replacement. How to fix a sagging mattress walks through each, the warranty guide covers the depth thresholds that get claims approved, and this checklist is the honest test for whether you are past saving it.

Temperature: the asymmetry nobody mentions

A pad is thin and mostly fiber, so its effect on how hot the bed sleeps is small — and a cotton-faced pad can even help slightly, because a breathable layer sits between you and a quilted synthetic mattress surface.

A topper is the opposite. Two to four inches of memory foam is two to four inches of insulation between you and whatever ventilation your mattress has, and gel infusion only lowers the surface temperature until it warms to your body. If your bed is already hot, the coolest topper is still warmer than no topper — and cooling sheets or a different approach will do more for you.

Key specs

  • Quilted fitted mattress pad
  • 8-21" deep pocket (as listed)
  • Noiseless, breathable (as listed)
  • Machine washable
  • Queen 60x80

What's good

  • The 8 to 21 inch pocket range (as listed) is unusually wide, which matters because a pad that will not reach around a tall mattress with a protector under it is the most common reason one gets returned
  • It is machine washable, which is the entire argument for a pad over a topper - you cannot wash foam, and a thin quilted layer goes in with the sheets
  • "Noiseless" is a real spec on this product category: the cheap waterproof pads crackle, and a crackling layer under the sheet is the thing people notice at 3am

What's not

  • A quilted pad adds a small amount of padding and nothing more - if the bed is genuinely too firm, this will not fix it
  • Water-resistant at best, not waterproof. For accidents you want a dedicated protector underneath
  • Polyester fill compresses with washing, so the modest loft it starts with diminishes

Your complaint is that the mattress is too firm. That is a topper problem - a pad is a surface layer, not a feel change.

EASELAND EASELAND Cotton Pillow-Top Mattress Pad

Key specs

  • Cotton pillow-top pad
  • Quilted (as listed)
  • Machine washable
  • Queen

What's good

  • A cotton face breathes, which is the one thing a polyester quilted pad cannot do - and a breathable layer directly under the sheet matters more than people expect for a warm bed
  • "Pillow top" here means more loft than a flat quilted pad, so it is the closest a washable layer gets to a topper's softening effect
  • It washes at home like a mattress pad should, which keeps the mattress underneath out of the laundry equation entirely

What's not

  • More loft means more bulk under the fitted sheet, so check your pocket depth before ordering
  • Cotton fill flattens in the high-pressure spots over time, and the pillow-top effect goes first
  • It costs more than a plain quilted pad for a difference most people would describe as subtle

You need a waterproof barrier. A cotton pad absorbs; it is the opposite of a protector, and it belongs on top of one.

MLILY MLILY 3" Gel Memory Foam Egg Crate Topper, 5 Zones, Queen

3. Best for A bed that is genuinely too firm

MLILY 3" Gel Memory Foam Egg Crate Topper, 5 Zones, Queen

If the problem is firmness rather than dirt, this is the side of the aisle you want. Three inches of zoned, convoluted foam changes how the bed feels in a way no washable pad can.

Price as of October 18, 2026. #ad — we earn a commission.

Key specs

  • 3" gel memory foam, 60 x 80 in queen (as listed)
  • 5 zones (as listed)
  • Cooling gel infusion (as listed)
  • Egg-crate convoluted surface (as listed)
  • CertiPUR-US certified foam (as listed)

What's good

  • Three inches is the thickness that actually changes a bed's feel - a pad adds padding, a three-inch topper changes how far your shoulder and hip sink
  • The zoning is a physical cut in the foam rather than a sticker, so your shoulder sinks while your hips stay held instead of bottoming into one uniform block
  • CertiPUR-US certification (as listed) covers what the foam is made of and emits, which is the only checkable claim on most foam listings

What's not

  • You cannot wash it. Foam is spot-clean only, which is exactly the trade you make when you move from a pad to a topper
  • Three inches on top of a 12-inch mattress needs a 15 to 16 inch fitted sheet pocket - standard sheets will pop off a corner
  • Memory foam insulates, so adding three inches of it makes a warm bed warmer no matter what the gel marketing says

Skip this one if

The mattress feels fine and you only want a washable layer. That is a pad, and it costs half as much.

Linenspa Linenspa 3" Gel Infused Memory Foam Topper, Queen

4. Best for A plain, predictable topper from a known brand

Linenspa 3" Gel Infused Memory Foam Topper, Queen

Key specs

  • 3" gel-infused memory foam
  • Plush feel (as listed)
  • CertiPUR-US certified foam
  • Queen

What's good

  • Linenspa has a long, stable Amazon history, which in a category full of six-month-old foam brands is the thing most likely to mean it arrives as photographed
  • A plain solid slab has more foam in it than a convoluted one of the same nominal height, so it compresses less under a heavier sleeper
  • "Plush" is honestly stated rather than dressed up as orthopedic, so you know what you are buying

What's not

  • A solid gel slab is the warmest-sleeping shape - gel helps until it reaches your body temperature and then stops
  • No removable cover stated, so a washable protector over the top is effectively mandatory
  • Same sheet-depth problem as any three-inch topper

Heat is part of your complaint. A solid slab insulates more than a convoluted one - the MLILY's air channels are the better shape for a warm bed.

Common questions

What is the difference between a mattress pad and a mattress topper?

Thickness, and therefore purpose. A mattress pad is a thin quilted layer - typically under an inch - that fits over the mattress like a fitted sheet, washes in a home machine, and adds a small amount of padding. A mattress topper is two to four inches of foam, latex or fiber that sits on top of the mattress, cannot be washed, and is thick enough to change how firm the bed feels. If you want a washable layer, buy a pad. If you want a different bed, buy a topper.

Do I need a mattress pad if I have a protector?

No, and that is worth being clear about because the three products get sold interchangeably. A protector is a waterproof barrier whose job is keeping liquid out of the mattress. A pad is a comfort layer that happens to be washable. They stack in that order - protector against the mattress, pad over it, sheet over that - but a pad does not replace a protector and a protector does not add padding. Our pad vs protector guide covers that pair specifically.

Will a topper or a pad fix a sagging mattress?

Neither will. This is the single most important thing on the page. A sag is a failure of support underneath, and anything you lay over the top follows the dip - so you get a softer version of the same hollow, which usually makes back pain worse rather than better. The honest options for a sag are plywood or a bunkie board under the mattress as a stopgap, a warranty claim if the depression meets the manufacturer's threshold, or a new mattress. A topper bought to fix a sag is money spent postponing a decision.

Can a mattress pad make a firm bed softer?

Slightly, and probably not enough. A pillow-top style pad adds maybe half an inch of fiber loft, which takes the edge off a firm quilted surface - noticeable, but nothing like a change in firmness. If you lie on your side and your shoulder has nowhere to go, you need something your shoulder can sink into, and that means at least two inches and realistically three. Buying a pad to solve a firmness problem is the most common mis-purchase in this category.

Which one is better for back pain?

A topper, if the bed is too firm for you - and nothing, if the bed is sagging or simply too soft. Back pain from bedding usually comes down to spinal alignment: too firm and your hips and shoulders cannot sink enough to keep your spine straight; too soft and your midsection drops. A topper can fix the first case because it adds sink-in depth. It cannot fix the second, and it makes a sag worse. We are a bedding site, not a clinic: persistent pain belongs with a doctor rather than a product page.

Do I need deeper sheets for either one?

Almost certainly for a topper, rarely for a pad. A standard fitted sheet is cut for roughly a 12 to 14 inch mattress. A thin pad adds under an inch and usually fits fine. A three-inch topper on a 12-inch mattress puts you at 15 inches, and a sheet stretched past its limit pops a corner every night until you give up on the topper. Measure the mattress, add the topper, and buy to that figure - or add sheet straps if you are only an inch over.
