What Are Pocketed Coils?
The phrase is on nearly every hybrid listing and almost never explained. A pocketed coil is one steel spring sewn into its own fabric sleeve so it moves on its own - and that single idea is the reason modern hybrids contour, isolate motion, and can be zoned for support.
If you have shopped for a hybrid mattress in the last few years, you have almost certainly read the phrase pocketed coils — sometimes written as individually wrapped, encased, or pocket springs — presented as if it were self-evidently a good thing. It usually is. But almost nobody selling you one stops to explain what a pocketed coil actually is, why it beat the old-fashioned innerspring, or where the marketing around it quietly falls apart.
The short version: a pocketed coil is a single steel spring sewn into its own little fabric sleeve, sitting beside hundreds of other springs that are each in their own sleeve. Because every coil is wrapped separately, each one can compress on its own without dragging its neighbors down with it. That single design change — springs that move independently instead of as a connected sheet — is the whole reason a modern hybrid feels the way it does.
One coil, one pocket
Picture a support layer built from hundreds — sometimes well over a thousand — of individual steel springs. In a pocketed-coil unit, each spring is dropped into a slender pocket of fabric (usually a spunbond polypropylene) and that pocket is sealed shut. The pockets are then glued or welded to one another side by side in rows, forming a single mattress-sized grid. From the outside it looks like one solid slab of springs. On the inside, though, nothing is physically wired together — every coil is a free agent, held in place only by its sleeve and its glued seams, free to sink or hold firm on its own.
You will see the identical thing sold under several names: pocketed coils, pocket springs, individually wrapped coils, encased coils, even Marshall coils (the original patent term). They all mean the same construction. If a listing uses any of those phrases, it is describing this fabric-sleeve build — and that is the coil unit sitting at the heart of nearly every hybrid on the market, including the beds on our best hybrid shortlist.
The old way: Bonnell and connected coils
To see why that matters, it helps to know what came before. The classic innerspring — the mattress most of us grew up on — uses an open, connected coil system. The best known is the Bonnell coil: an hourglass-shaped spring, and crucially, every coil is laced to its neighbors by a helical wire running across the top and bottom. The whole bed is one interconnected web of steel.
That connection is the problem. Press down in one spot and the linked wires transmit that force outward, so a whole region of the bed dips together, a bit like pushing on a trampoline. Roll over and your partner feels it. Sit on the edge and the middle heaves up. Connected coils are cheap, durable and bouncy, but they physically cannot respond to one part of your body without also responding everywhere the wires reach. Why independence is the whole point
Once you cut those connecting wires and give every spring its own pocket, three things change — and all three are the reasons pocketed coils took over the market.
- Contouring. Because each coil compresses only under the weight directly above it, the surface can follow the actual shape of your body — sinking under a heavy hip, staying supportive under a lighter calf — instead of averaging you out into one flat plane. It is a far closer thing to the cradling that memory foam is famous for, only delivered by steel.
- Motion isolation. This is the headline benefit for couples. When your partner shifts, only the coils beneath them move; the ones under you barely register it. A connected innerspring passes that motion straight across the bed. Pocketed coils do not make a mattress as dead-still as solid foam, but they close most of the gap.
- Zoned support. Since the coils are individual, a maker can build different firmnesses into different regions of the bed — firmer, thicker coils under the hips and lower back where you need push-back, softer ones under the shoulders so they can tuck in. That kind of targeted support is simply impossible when every spring is wired to the next.
The coil-count and coil-gauge games
Here is where I have to be a killjoy, because the spec sheet is exactly where pocketed-coil marketing gets slippery.
Coil count is the number everyone quotes — you will see beds bragging about eight hundred, a thousand, twelve hundred and up in a queen — and the pitch is always that more is better. It is not that simple. Past a genuinely useful threshold, adding coils delivers rapidly shrinking returns, and the count tells you nothing about the quality of the steel, the height of the coils, or how the bed is actually tuned. A cleverly engineered mattress with a moderate count can easily outperform a cheap one that leans on a huge number. Treat coil count as one input, not a score.
Coil gauge is the thickness of the spring wire, and confusingly the scale runs backwards: a lower gauge number means a thicker, firmer wire, a higher number means a thinner, softer one. Gauge is a real, meaningful spec — it genuinely affects how firm and how durable a coil is — but it is oversold, because you almost never get to verify it. Most listings do not publish gauge at all, and even when they do, you cannot feel a single number in isolation; what you feel is the whole system, coils plus the foam comfort layers stacked on top. So gauge is worth understanding and nearly impossible to shop on. Do not let a lone number make the decision for you.
What coils give you that foam cannot
So why put springs in a bed at all, when all-foam mattresses exist and are often cheaper to ship? Because a coil unit does several things a solid slab of foam struggles with.
- Airflow and cooling. The open space around and between the pockets lets air move through the core of the bed, carrying heat and humidity away. A dense foam core traps both. This is a big part of why hybrids tend to sleep cooler than all-foam beds.
- Edge support. Firmer perimeter coils — or a reinforced steel-rod edge — let you sit and sleep near the side without the mattress collapsing under you. That matters for sharing a bed, and for just getting dressed in the morning.
- Bounce and responsiveness. Steel springs push back and rebound. If you dislike the slow, sinking, quicksand feel of deep memory foam — or you simply want it to be easy to move and reposition — coils give you that lively response that foam has to work hard to fake.

The honest downsides
Coils are not free, and independence is not total. Three caveats keep pocketed coils in perspective:
- They transmit a little more motion than solid foam. Pocketed coils isolate motion far better than a connected innerspring, but a springy surface still passes along slightly more than a dense all-foam bed does. For most couples the difference is minor; for the most motion-sensitive sleepers it is real.
- They can eventually squeak. Any bed with steel in it can develop a creak over the years, usually from the foundation or the bed frame rather than the pockets themselves — and it is often a loose slat or bolt, not the mattress at all. It is rarely a day-one problem, but a foam bed simply cannot make the noise, and a coil bed can.
- They add weight and a higher price floor. A steel coil unit makes for a heavier mattress and sets a higher starting price than a basic all-foam bed. You are buying more material, and that shows up on the tag and in how hard the thing is to move.
Who a pocketed-coil hybrid is for
Reach for a pocketed-coil hybrid if you sleep hot and want a cooler core; if you share the bed and want solid motion isolation without giving up bounce and edge support; if you are heavier and want the reliable push-back that steel provides; or if you simply dislike the sinking feel of all-foam and want a more responsive, get-up-and-go surface with a little cushioning on top. This is the bed for the person who wants support that fights back.
Lean the other way — toward all-foam — if your single highest priority is a rock-still, motion-dead surface for a very light-sleeping partner, if you want the lowest possible price, or if you love that deep, slow, hugging sink only foam delivers.
