The Best Headboards

Buy the Lucid Mid-Rise. It is the one that solves the problem that sends most headboards back - height - by adjusting between 34 and 46 inches on the struts, so it works over a low platform bed and a 15-inch pillow-top alike. Six more below for charging ports, solid wood, wall mounting, renting, and a wingback that costs less than it looks.

Lucid Lucid Mid-Rise Upholstered Headboard, Diamond Tufted, Stone, Queen

Lucid Mid-Rise Upholstered Headboard, Diamond Tufted, Stone, Queen

The safest headboard purchase on this list, because it is the one least likely to be the wrong size. The struts adjust between 34 and 46 inches, which is a twelve-inch window - wide enough to cover a low platform bed and a tall pillow-top mattress with the same product. Lucid also makes bed frames, so the bolt pattern is designed against real frames rather than hoped at.

HOOBRO HOOBRO Queen Headboard with Storage and Charging Station, Black

HOOBRO Queen Headboard with Storage and Charging Station, Black

The practical pick, and the one that earns its space twice. It carries an AC outlet, a USB-A port and a USB-C port built into the frame plus a shelf, which means a bedroom too narrow for a nightstand still gets somewhere to put a phone, a glass and a book. Height is adjustable, which keeps it in the same low-risk category as the Lucid.

Zinus Zinus Satish Upholstered Headboard, Channel Stitched, Full, Grey

Zinus Satish Upholstered Headboard, Channel Stitched, Full, Grey

The cheapest headboard here from a brand with a real bed catalog, and channel stitching is the detail that makes it look more expensive than it is - vertical channels read as deliberate where flat upholstery reads as cheap. If you already own a Zinus frame, this is the lowest-friction way to add a headboard to it.

AFI AFI Casanova King Wood Panel Headboard, Walnut

AFI Casanova King Wood Panel Headboard, Walnut

The real-timber pick. Everything else on this page is fabric over foam or engineered board, and a wood panel headboard is a different object - it does not compress, does not stain, does not collect hair oil, and still looks right in twenty years. A walnut panel is also the easiest thing in a bedroom to match to existing furniture, because wood tones read as neutral in a way that a colored fabric never does.

Nathan James Nathan James Harlow Wall Mount Hanging Headboard, Queen, Brown Faux Leather

Nathan James Harlow Wall Mount Hanging Headboard, Queen, Brown Faux Leather

The answer when the frame cannot take a headboard at all. It hangs on the wall rather than bolting to the bed, which solves three problems at once: platform frames sold without brackets, metal frames whose bolt pattern matches nothing, and adjustable bases, where a bed-mounted headboard moves with the mattress every time you raise the head. Faux leather is also the single easiest headboard surface to wipe clean.

IFNOW IFNOW Wall Mounted Headboard, Peel and Stick Panels, Dark Grey, Queen

IFNOW Wall Mounted Headboard, Peel and Stick Panels, Dark Grey, Queen

The one pick here that touches neither the bed nor a drill. Tufted fabric panels stick to the wall, come off again, and can be rearranged, which makes it the only honest answer for a rented bedroom or a lease that itemizes wall damage. It is also the cheapest thing on this page by a wide margin, and the listing claims acoustic padding, which is an unusual bonus on a shared wall.

Madison Park Amelia Upholstered Headboard, Nailhead Trim Wingback, Queen, Cream

The one on this page bought for how it looks rather than what it solves. A button-tufted wingback with nailhead trim is the silhouette people associate with expensive bedroom furniture, and the wings have a practical side too: they stop pillows sliding off the sides of the bed, which a flat panel does not. It is the most expensive pick here and still costs less than most showroom headboards.

Check how it attaches before you look at a single photo

Headboards get returned for one reason far more than any other, and it is not color. It is that the thing would not attach to the bed.

There are three mounting systems on this page and they are not interchangeable:

  • Strut-mounted - two metal legs bolt to brackets on the head end of your bed frame. This is most headboards, including the Lucid, the Zinus, the HOOBRO and the Madison Park. It requires a frame that has those brackets.
  • Wall-mounted - the board hangs on the wall behind the bed, touching the frame not at all. The Nathan James pick works this way. It requires studs or proper anchors.
  • Adhesive panels - the IFNOW pick. No frame, no drilling, no fixings. It requires a wall surface the adhesive will hold on and release from.

So the first thing to do is not browse. It is to pull the bed away from the wall and look at the head end of the frame. If there are two uprights with slotted bolt holes, you can buy anything on this page. If there are not, you are choosing between the wall-mounted pick and the adhesive panels, and everything else is irrelevant however good it looks.

If you are buying the frame at the same time, our bed frame roundup notes which frames ship with headboard brackets, and the platform bed guide explains why so many modern frames come without them.

The criteria we ranked on

Four, in this order.

Mounting flexibility. A headboard that fits more situations is worth more than a headboard that fits one. Adjustable struts and wall mounting both buy flexibility; a fixed-height strut board buys none.

Height range against modern mattresses. Mattress height has drifted upward for twenty years. A board designed around a 10-inch mattress disappears behind the pillows on a 15-inch pillow top. The Lucid's twelve-inch adjustment window is the single most useful specification on this page.

What the surface does in year three. Upholstery behind heads absorbs hair oil. Light fabric shows it, dark fabric hides it, faux leather wipes, and wood does not care. This is an ownership question that almost no listing addresses, so we have.

What the listing commits to in print. A stated adjustment range, a stated port type, a stated construction. Where a listing is silent, we have put that in the cons rather than inventing a number.

What we did not do: score these out of ten. We have not assembled them and we do not run a furniture lab, so every specification above is quoted from the seller's listing and marked "as listed." How we review sets out what that means.

The height question, worked through

This is where most headboard disappointment comes from, and it is pure arithmetic.

A headboard looks right when the top of it sits roughly 10 to 14 inches above the top of the mattress - high enough to be seen above a stack of pillows, low enough not to loom. Below that it vanishes. Above about 20 inches it starts to dominate a small room.

So the number that matters is not the headboard height. It is:

floor to top of mattress, plus 12 inches, equals the headboard height you want.

A 14-inch frame with an 8-inch foam mattress gives 22 inches, so you want a headboard around 34 inches tall. A 14-inch frame with a 15-inch pillowtop gives 29 inches, so you want around 41. That is a seven-inch spread between two perfectly ordinary bedrooms, which is exactly why a fixed-height board is a gamble and the adjustable ones are ranked where they are.

One more measurement people forget: a wingback headboard like the Madison Park is wider than the bed. Measure the wall, not the mattress. Our bed frame sizes guide has the standard footprints to work from.

Upholstered, wood, or panels - what you are signing up for

The surface decides the maintenance, and almost nobody thinks about it at the point of sale.

Upholstered fabric is the most comfortable to lean on and the most work to own. The spot where heads rest will darken, because hair oil transfers and fabric absorbs it. Dark colors and textured weaves hide this for years; cream and pale grey do not. Tufting and channel stitching both help, because the pattern breaks up the shading. Everything here is spot-clean only.

Faux leather - the Nathan James - is the compromise. You wipe it with a damp cloth and the oil problem disappears entirely. The trade is that faux leather eventually cracks along fold lines, which fabric does not.

Solid wood - the AFI - has no maintenance story at all. It does not stain, compress or absorb anything, and it is the only option here that will look the same in fifteen years. It is also hard, so leaning back on it means a pillow.

Engineered wood with shelving - the HOOBRO - sits between the two. Easy to wipe, nothing to stain, but it is particleboard under a finish and it does not take being disassembled and moved repeatedly.

When the headboard should be wall-mounted instead

Three situations, and one of them is not obvious.

Your frame has no brackets. The common case, covered above.

You rent. Adhesive panels, not a drilled wall mount. The IFNOW pick exists for this.

You sleep on an adjustable base. This is the one people get wrong. A headboard bolted to an adjustable base tilts forward every time the head section raises - it moves with the mattress rather than staying behind it, and over months it scuffs the wall it keeps swinging toward. A wall-mounted board stays put and the mattress simply articulates away from it. Some base manufacturers sell purpose-built headboard brackets that solve this properly; check the documentation for yours first. Our adjustable base roundup covers which bases publish headboard compatibility, and the adjustable bed guide explains the rest of what changes when you move to one.

If you do mount to a wall, mount it to studs or to proper heavy-duty anchors. An upholstered queen headboard is not light, and the wall above a bed is the one place in the house where a failure happens over somebody asleep. This is the least glamorous paragraph on the page and the most important one.

What a headboard actually does for you

It is worth being clear that this is not a performance purchase. A headboard holds nothing up and changes nothing about how the mattress feels. If the bed is uncomfortable, the answer is in the mattress or a topper, not here.

What it genuinely does:

  • Stops pillows disappearing into the gap between mattress and wall, which is the single most common daily annoyance it fixes.
  • Protects the paint. The wall behind an unheadboarded bed collects marks exactly where heads rest, and repainting costs more than most of these picks.
  • Gives you something to lean on if you read, work or watch anything in bed - which is the one job wood and shelving do badly and padding does well.
  • Finishes the room. A bed without a headboard reads as temporary. That is not a measurable benefit and it is still the reason most people buy one.

What we cannot tell you about these headboards

We have not assembled them. Every specification above is quoted from the seller's listing and labeled as such, and the verdicts are judgments about mounting, geometry and material - things you can reason about from a listing - our editorial policy sets out where that stops.

The things a listing cannot tell you: how square the predrilled holes actually are, whether the supplied bolts are the right length for your bracket, and how heavy the panel feels at the moment you are holding it one-handed. Those are the three things that decide whether assembly takes twenty minutes or an evening, and the only honest source on them is the question-and-answer section of the listing itself, read before ordering.

One practical thing we can say: buy the hardware upgrade before you need it. Longer bolts and washers cost a few dollars at any hardware store and solve most of the bracket mismatches people report.

Lucid Lucid Mid-Rise Upholstered Headboard, Diamond Tufted, Stone, Queen

1. Best for Most bedrooms - adjustable height on a brand that makes frames

Key specs

  • Queen (as listed)
  • Adjustable height, 34 to 46 inches (as listed)
  • Diamond tufted design (as listed)
  • Padded polyester upholstery (as listed)
  • Attaches to a bed frame via struts (as listed)

What's good

  • The adjustment range is the whole point - a headboard sold at one fixed height is a guess about your mattress, and mattress heights now run from 8 inches to 16
  • Diamond tufting hides creasing and shadow far better than a flat upholstered panel, which starts looking tired the first time somebody leans back on it
  • A brand with a frame catalog behind it means the strut spacing matches a known standard rather than a proprietary one, and replacement hardware is findable

What's not

  • Strut-mounted only - there is no wall-mount option, so if your frame has no headboard bolt holes this is the wrong product entirely
  • Polyester upholstery is spot-clean, not washable, and the light colorways show hair oil where heads rest against them
  • Assembly involves bolting struts to a frame while holding a heavy padded panel upright, which is a genuinely two-person job however the listing phrases it

HOOBRO HOOBRO Queen Headboard with Storage and Charging Station, Black

2. Best for Small bedrooms with no room for a nightstand

  • 1 AC outlet, 1 USB-A port, 1 USB-C port (as listed)
  • Storage shelf (as listed)
  • Adjustable height (as listed)
  • Easy assembly (as listed)

What's good

  • A USB-C port rather than two USB-A ports is a small detail that dates the product correctly - most phones and tablets sold now charge over C
  • Storage plus charging in the headboard is the honest fix for a room where the bed reaches both walls, and it costs less than a nightstand plus an extension lead
  • Open shelving is far easier to dust and far less likely to become a crumb trap than an upholstered panel with a ledge

What's not

  • A powered headboard means a cable running to a wall socket behind the bed, which is one more thing to route and one more reason you cannot push the bed flat against the wall
  • Hard surfaces are unforgiving to lean on - there is nothing padded here, so reading in bed means stacking pillows behind you
  • Engineered wood construction on this shelf generally, so it will not survive repeated disassembly and moving the way solid timber does

Zinus Zinus Satish Upholstered Headboard, Channel Stitched, Full, Grey

3. Best for The value pick from a brand you can match a frame to

Key specs

  • Full size (as listed)
  • Channel stitched upholstery (as listed)
  • Easy assembly (as listed)
  • Grey colorway (as listed)
  • Headboard only, attaches to a frame (as listed)

What's good

  • Channel stitching is the most forgiving upholstery pattern on a budget headboard - the vertical lines break up the panel so slight unevenness in the padding never shows
  • Zinus bed frames are among the most common on Amazon, so this is the pairing most likely to simply bolt on without an adapter
  • Cheap enough to treat as a style decision rather than a furniture decision, which is the right frame of mind for a headboard

What's not

  • This listing is the Full size - queen and king are separate listings at different prices, so confirm the size before ordering rather than assuming the family spans sizes evenly
  • No stated height adjustment range on the listing, so unlike the Lucid you are trusting the fixed geometry to suit your mattress height
  • Grey polyester is the colorway that most visibly collects dust and lint, and it is spot-clean only

Key specs

  • King (as listed)
  • Wood panel construction (as listed)
  • Walnut finish (as listed)
  • Headboard only (as listed)
  • AFI Casanova line (as listed)

What's good

  • Nothing to clean, nothing to stain and nothing to compress - a wood headboard is the only version of this product that genuinely does not age
  • Easier to live with in a warm room: fabric and foam behind your head hold heat, timber does not
  • Holds resale and reuse value in a way upholstery does not, which matters on a piece you may move house with twice

What's not

  • This listing is the King - the Casanova line runs other sizes as separate listings, so match the size to your frame rather than to the family name
  • A hard panel is uncomfortable to lean on without pillows, which is the universal trade with wood headboards
  • Solid wood is heavy, and heavy plus flat plus large means two people and a clear hallway on assembly day

What's good

  • Wall mounting is the only approach that works with an adjustable base, because the headboard stays put while the mattress articulates - a strut-mounted board tilts with it
  • Faux leather wipes clean with a damp cloth, which no fabric headboard on this page will do
  • Hanging the board means you can set the height exactly where you want it rather than where the struts allow, including high enough to clear a tall mattress

What's not

  • You are putting real weight on a wall, so this needs studs or proper anchors - a plasterboard wall with the wrong fixings is a genuine hazard rather than a cosmetic risk
  • Permanent holes, which is the reason renters should look at the peel-and-stick panel instead
  • Faux leather splits eventually at the fold lines on any upholstered product, and this one has visible channels

Key specs

  • Queen (as listed)
  • Peel and stick wall panels (as listed)
  • Reusable and removable (as listed)
  • Tufted fabric surface (as listed)
  • 3D soundproof acoustic padding (as listed)

What's good

  • No drilling, no brackets, no frame compatibility question - the three things that make headboard shopping difficult simply do not apply
  • Panels mean you set the width and height yourself, so it works over a bed of any size including a split king or an odd vintage frame
  • Acoustic padding on a shared bedroom wall is a real, if modest, benefit that no other headboard here offers

What's not

  • Adhesive on a painted wall is a gamble whatever the listing says about removability - fresh paint, textured walls and old plaster all fail differently, and the honest advice is to test one panel in a corner first
  • It is wall decor rather than furniture: it will not stop pillows sliding behind the bed, which is one of the practical jobs a real headboard does
  • Panel systems only look deliberate if they are laid out squarely, so budget an hour and a spirit level rather than ten minutes

  • Nailhead trim (as listed)
  • Cream colorway, headboard only (as listed)

What's good

  • Wings are not just styling - they contain the pillows, which is the daily annoyance a flat headboard never fixes
  • Nailhead trim and deep button tufting are the two details that separate a headboard that looks bought from one that looks improvised
  • Madison Park is a bedding brand, so matching a quilt or coverlet to the colorway is easier than with a furniture-only maker

What's not

  • Cream upholstery behind heads is the hardest-to-maintain combination on this page - plan on a protector pillow or accept that it will mark
  • Wingbacks are wide: measure the wall, not the mattress, because the wings add several inches beyond the bed on each side
  • No stated height adjustment, so unlike the Lucid you are fixed to whatever the struts give you against your mattress height

Your bedroom is narrow or the bed sits in an alcove. A wingback needs clearance on both sides that a flat headboard does not.

Common questions

Will a headboard fit my bed frame?

Only if the frame has headboard brackets, and not every frame does. Most metal frames and most bed-in-a-box platform frames include two uprights at the head end with slotted holes, and a strut-mounted headboard bolts to those. Many solid platform beds, upholstered beds and storage beds have no brackets at all, because they were designed as complete beds. Before buying anything strut-mounted, go and look at the head end of your frame: if there are no bolt holes, no strut-mounted headboard will attach, and you want a wall-mounted one instead. The second thing to check is the slot spacing on those brackets, since strut width is near-standard but not actually standard.

How tall should a headboard be?

Tall enough that it is still visible above the pillows, which in practice means the top of the board should sit roughly 10 to 14 inches above the top of the mattress. The complication is that mattress heights now vary enormously - an 8-inch foam mattress on a low platform and a 15-inch pillowtop on a standard frame put the sleeping surface a foot apart, and a fixed-height headboard that looks right over one looks wrong over the other. That is why adjustable struts are worth paying for. Measure from the floor to the top of your mattress, add 12 inches, and buy a headboard whose range covers that number.

Can you use a headboard with an adjustable bed base?

Yes, but it should be wall-mounted rather than attached to the base. A headboard bolted to an adjustable base tilts forward every time you raise the head of the bed, which looks wrong and eventually scuffs the wall behind it. A wall-mounted or hanging headboard stays still while the mattress articulates, and the mattress simply slides slightly forward away from it during the day. Some adjustable base manufacturers also sell bracket kits specifically for their models - check the base's own documentation first, because if a purpose-built bracket exists it is a better answer than either alternative. Our adjustable bed base roundup covers which bases publish headboard compatibility.

Do you need a headboard at all?

No. A headboard has no structural role: it holds nothing up and contributes nothing to how the mattress performs. What it does is three practical things and one aesthetic one. It stops pillows sliding into the gap between mattress and wall, it protects the paint from heads and hair oil, it gives something to lean on if you read or work in bed, and it makes a bed read as a piece of furniture rather than a mattress in a room. If none of those are problems for you, the money is better spent elsewhere in the bed - a protector, better sheets, or the topper that fixes how the mattress actually feels.

What is the difference between a headboard and a full bed frame?

A headboard is only the panel at the head end. A bed frame is the structure that carries the mattress - the rails, the legs and the slats or platform. They are sold both ways: as a complete bed where the headboard is integral, and as separate pieces you combine. Buying them separately is usually cheaper and always more flexible, because you can replace the headboard when taste changes without replacing the part that does the work. The catch is compatibility, which is the entire subject of the first question above. Our bed frame roundup covers the support side of the decision, and the platform bed guide explains why some frames come without headboard brackets in the first place.
