Signature Design by Ashley Signature Design by Ashley Queen Pillow Top 13-Inch Hybrid Mattress

Signature Design by Ashley Queen Pillow Top 13-Inch Hybrid Mattress

The pick that gets the ratio right. A pillow top is only as good as the support under it, and this one puts the quilted surface over pocketed coils with gel memory foam rather than over a slab of poly foam, which is the difference between a plush bed and a soft bed that bottoms out. It is a furniture brand rather than a mattress startup, and the listing commits to edge support and fiberglass-free construction in print - two things most of this shelf stays quiet about.

Serta Serta Perfect Sleeper Port Angeles 14-Inch Medium Pillow Top Queen Mattress

Serta Perfect Sleeper Port Angeles 14-Inch Medium Pillow Top Queen Mattress

If what you actually want is the bed from a hotel or a showroom floor, this is the most reachable version of it. Serta publishes a named firmness - medium - which almost nothing else on this shelf does, and medium is the correct answer for a pillow top: the cushion supplies the softness, so the core underneath should not. Five support zones and a stated cooling treatment put it ahead of the generic plush tops at the same money.

The best-specified budget pillow top we could find listed. It names its firmness (medium firm), states motion isolation, carries CertiPUR-US foam certification and says where it is made - four claims the cheap end of the plush shelf usually leaves blank. Medium firm with a pillow top is the combination most back and combination sleepers should be looking at, and very few sellers offer it this cheaply.

Sealy Sealy Posturepedic Plus Glenshaw 15-Inch Firm Pillowtop Innerspring Mattress, Queen

Sealy Posturepedic Plus Glenshaw 15-Inch Firm Pillowtop Innerspring Mattress, Queen

The one pick here built the old way: a true innerspring, 15 inches tall, with the pillowtop sewn on rather than compressed into a box. It is also the only mattress on this page that solves the combination plenty of people with back trouble are looking for and cannot find - firm support with a cushioned surface, so the shoulders and hips get relief without the lower back losing its platform. It costs what a conventionally built mattress costs, which is to say a lot.

The only mattress here that puts the word soft on the listing, and on a pillow top shelf that is the specification people are usually hunting for and rarely find written down. Traditional innerspring construction under a soft pillowtop is the classic plush hotel bed, and this is the cheapest honest version of it from a brand with a warranty behind it.

Sweetnight CoolNest 14-Inch Hybrid Queen Mattress, Cooling Pillow Top, Medium Firm

A pillow top is the worst construction in the bed for heat, because the thing that makes it plush is a thick layer of fill sitting directly under you. This is the one pick that addresses that head-on: the cooling treatment is in the pillow top itself rather than only in the cover, and the listing states a four-stage breathability design and seven-zone support rather than just the word cool.

CertiPUR-US certified, and at 12 inches it is the one mattress here that works with sheets you already own.

A pillow top is a comfort layer, not a mattress

This is the most useful thing to understand before spending money here, and it is the reason the picks above are ranked the way they are.

"Pillow top" describes a pad of soft fill sewn onto the top of a mattress. It says nothing at all about what is underneath it. Two beds with identical plush tops can be a well-supported hybrid and a soft foam slab, and they will feel the same in a showroom for about ninety seconds and completely different at 4 a.m. in month eight.

So the question is never "is this a good pillow top." It is what is holding the pillow top up. Pocketed coils, a zoned coil unit, or a dense foam core will keep the cushion feeling like a cushion. A cheap soft core lets the whole bed give at once, and a bed that gives at once is the one people describe as a hammock.

If you have not settled on the feel yet, our pillow top versus euro top guide covers which plush surface suits which sleeper. This page assumes you want the plush top and is about choosing one that lasts.

The criteria we ranked on

Four things separate the beds above, in this order.

What is under the cushion. A coil unit or a stated hybrid construction ranks above an unspecified core every time. Six of the seven picks state coils; the ranking inside that group turns on how much the listing says about them.

Whether the firmness is published.Pillow top is the category where sellers hide behind adjectives, because the plush layer makes everything feel soft on first contact. A listing that says "medium" or "medium firm" or "soft" has committed to something you can hold it to. Five of these do.

Height, treated as a cost rather than a feature. Every inch of pillow top is an inch your sheets have to stretch over and an inch further you climb into bed. Fifteen inches is not better than twelve; it is a different set of problems.

What the listing refuses to say. No coil count, no firmness, no certification, no fire-barrier statement - that is a pattern, and on this shelf it is the common one. We have said so in the cons on every pick where it applies.

What we did not rank on: a score out of ten. We do not have a test lab, so we do not publish numbers we did not measure. Every spec above is quoted from the seller's own listing and labeled as such, and the verdicts are opinions about construction, not test results. How we review sets out what that means in practice.

The one-sided problem nobody mentions at the till

Almost every pillowtop sold today is one-sided. The cushion is sewn onto the top face only, which means the mattress cannot be flipped.

That matters more than it sounds. The traditional two-sided innerspring had a genuine maintenance story: flip it twice a year and the wear alternated between two surfaces, which roughly doubled how long it felt new. A one-sided pillowtop has one surface, and the thick soft layer on it is the part most prone to taking a permanent impression where a body lies.

You can still rotate it head to foot, and you should - every three to six months, which moves the hip load to a different part of the cushion. Our flip-or-rotate guide covers how to tell which your mattress wants. But rotating spreads wear; it does not reset it.

The honest consequence: if a renewable plush surface is what you want, a firmer mattress plus a replaceable mattress topper does that, and a pillowtop does not. The topper costs a fraction of the mattress and can be thrown out in three years. A compressed pillow top is permanent. Plenty of people still prefer the integrated feel - it is quieter, it does not slide, and it looks like a bed rather than a bed with something on it - but that should be a decision rather than a surprise.

Measure before you buy, because this is the tallest shelf in the bedroom

Pillow tops are the reason deep-pocket sheets exist. Four of the seven picks above are 14 inches or taller before you add anything, and a mattress protector adds a fraction of an inch of fabric that has to go somewhere.

Three numbers worth writing down before you order:

  • Mattress height plus protector. Buy a fitted sheet with a pocket depth above that, not equal to it. A sheet stretched to its exact limit is the sheet that snaps off the corner. Our deep pocket sheets roundup covers which brands label depth honestly.
  • Frame height plus mattress height. Add them. If the total puts the sleeping surface much above 25 inches, getting out of bed becomes a step down rather than a swing of the legs - a real issue for older sleepers and anyone with knee or hip trouble. A low platform frame fixes it, and our bed frame roundup lists heights.
  • The doorway and the stairwell. A traditionally built 15-inch innerspring queen does not bend. The two Sealy picks above arrive at full size on a freight truck, which is a different proposition from a compressed roll you carry upstairs under one arm.

Pillow top and heat: the trade you are making

A pillow top is structurally the warmest thing you can sleep on. The plush feel comes from a thick layer of fill pressed directly against you, the fill traps the air that would otherwise carry heat away, and the deeper you sink into it the more of your body is surrounded rather than exposed.

Cooling treatments help at the margin. A phase-change cover, a gel-infused comfort layer, or a stated breathability design - like the four-stage construction on the Sweetnight pick - all make a difference to the first hour. None of them change the geometry.

So if heat is your primary complaint, the honest advice is that this is the wrong shelf. A firmer, thinner, more breathable bed sleeps cooler than any plush top with cooling marketing on it, and our cooling mattress roundup ranks those. If heat is a secondary complaint and you want the plush feel anyway, buy the cooling pillow top and fix the rest of the bed around it: percale or linen rather than microfiber sheets, a lighter comforter, and a breathable protector rather than a laminated one.

Who a pillow top is actually right for

Three groups get the most out of this construction, and one group should walk past it.

Side sleepers benefit most. The shoulder and hip are the two points that need to drop below the line of the spine, and a thick cushion is an efficient way to let them. Pair it with a core that does not also give - our side sleeper roundup goes further into why the core matters more than the surface here.

Lighter sleepers - roughly under 130 pounds - often find firm mattresses genuinely uncomfortable, because there is not enough weight to engage the comfort layers at all. A plush top solves that without needing a soft core. See mattresses for lightweight people.

People replacing an old plush bed who already know they like the feel. Familiarity is a legitimate reason to buy something, and the adjustment period on a bed that feels like your last one is far easier than on a bed that does not.

Heavier sleepers should be careful. Above roughly 230 pounds a soft pillowtop compresses to the point where it stops contributing anything and you are effectively sleeping on the core, while the compressed cushion still creates the body impression. A firmer pillowtop over a reinforced coil unit can work - our roundup for heavier sleepers covers what to look for in coil gauge and layer density, and most of it points away from plush.

What we cannot tell you about these mattresses

We have not slept on them. There is no test lab behind this site and no pressure-mapping rig, and we are not going to pretend otherwise - our editorial policy spells out the limits.

What that means concretely: every specification above is quoted from the seller's published listing and marked "as listed," and the verdicts are judgments about construction and value- what is under the cushion, what the listing commits to, what it leaves out. Where a listing does not publish a coil count or a firmness level, we have said so in that pick's cons rather than filling in a plausible number.

The things we genuinely cannot assess from a listing: how a given cushion feels to your particular shoulder, how much the top will compress under your particular weight in two years, and whether a brand's warranty claims process is reasonable in practice. Which is why the single most valuable line on any of these listings is the trial period. Our mattress trial guide covers how to use one properly - including the fact that a plush bed takes longer to judge than a firm one, because the cushion keeps softening for the first few weeks.

Where to go from here

If the plush feel is settled and you just need a bed, start at the top of the picks. If you are still weighing the surface against the alternatives:

Key specs

  • 13 inches tall (as listed)
  • Pillow top hybrid: gel memory foam over coils (as listed)
  • Edge support (as listed)
  • Fiberglass-free (as listed)
  • Ships compressed, bed in a box (as listed)

What's good

  • Fiberglass-free is stated on the listing, which matters more on a pillow top than anywhere else in the bed - the plush top is the layer most likely to get unzipped or have its cover torn, and fiberglass is the flame barrier you never want to meet
  • Edge support is the quiet failure point of plush beds: a soft top with no reinforced perimeter is a bed you roll off the side of, and sitting on the edge to put socks on collapses it
  • A coil unit under the cushion means the plush feel comes from the top layer doing its job, not from the whole mattress giving way, which is what makes a pillow top feel luxurious instead of saggy

What's not

  • 13 inches plus a pillow top means a deep-pocket fitted sheet is not optional - standard 12-inch pockets will pop a corner and ordinary sheets will fight you from day one
  • Firmness is not published as a number or a named level on the listing, so the plush-versus-medium question is one you settle in the trial period rather than before buying
  • Compressed shipping is convenient and it is also the hardest thing you can do to a quilted top - expect the surface to look uneven for the first few days while the fill redistributes

Key specs

  • 14 inches tall (as listed)
  • Medium firmness, pillow top (as listed)
  • 5 support zones (as listed)
  • 4-in-1 coils (as listed)
  • Cooling technology in the comfort layer (as listed)

What's good

  • A published firmness level on a plush bed is rarer than it should be, and 'medium pillow top' tells you exactly what you are getting: a supportive core with the give concentrated in the top inch or two
  • Zoned coils are the sensible pairing with a thick cushion - a firmer middle third resists the hip sink that a deep plush top otherwise encourages
  • A mainstream brand means a mattress local retailers also stock, so if it turns out to be wrong for you there is a showroom where you can lie on the alternative

What's not

  • Ships in three to five days rather than next-day, because this is a conventionally built mattress being freighted rather than a compressed roll
  • Cooling technology is the seller's own phrasing with no material named, so there is nothing to compare against the picks that specify a fiber or a gel
  • At 14 inches this is one of the taller beds here before you add a topper or a protector, and getting in and out of a high bed is a real consideration for some people

Key specs

  • 14 inches tall (as listed)
  • Hybrid pillow top: foam over coils (as listed)
  • Medium firm (as listed)
  • CertiPUR-US certified foam (as listed)
  • Made in USA (as listed)

What's good

  • Medium firm under a pillow top is the ratio that ages best - the cushion softens over years and a firmer core stops that from turning into a hollow
  • CertiPUR-US certification is a real third-party foam standard rather than a marketing word, and on a cheap mattress it is the single claim most worth having
  • Motion isolation on a coil bed is not a given, and a plush top helps it - this is one of the few budget pillow tops that claims it rather than hoping you do not notice

What's not

  • No published coil count or coil gauge, so there is no way to compare the support unit against the traditional-brand picks above
  • Medium firm is a firmness most people who type 'pillow top' are not expecting - if you want to sink into the bed rather than onto it, this will read as too firm
  • A direct-to-Amazon brand with no showroom presence, so the trial period is the only way to try it

  • Firm pillowtop, innerspring (as listed)
  • Sealy Posturepedic Plus line (as listed)
  • Queen (as listed)
  • Freight delivery, usually ships in 5 to 7 days (as listed)

What's good

  • Firm core plus plush top is a genuinely scarce specification, and it is the shape of bed for anyone who has bounced between one that hurt their hips and one that hurt their back
  • Traditional construction means no off-gassing week and no waiting for a compressed mattress to decide what shape it is - it arrives at full height
  • Posturepedic Plus is a long-running line with a documented warranty and a retail footprint, which is worth real money on a purchase you intend to keep ten years

What's not

  • The most expensive pick on the page by a wide margin, and most of the premium buys traditional construction rather than measurably better sleep
  • 15 inches is very tall - deep-pocket sheets are mandatory, a standard frame plus this mattress puts the surface high, and it is heavy enough that rotating it is a two-person job
  • A sewn-on pillowtop is one-sided and cannot be flipped, so when the cushion compresses on your side there is no second surface to move to

Sealy Warner 14-Inch Soft Pillowtop Innerspring Mattress, Queen

The only mattress here that puts the word soft on the listing, and on a pillow top shelf that is the specification people are usually hunting for and rarely find written down. • 14 inches tall (as listed)
  • Soft pillowtop (as listed)
  • Innerspring construction (as listed)
  • Queen (as listed)
  • Freight delivery, usually ships in 5 to 7 days (as listed)

What's good

  • Soft is stated rather than implied, which removes the single biggest gamble in buying a plush mattress online
  • A soft surface over a coil unit is the right geometry for a side sleeper - the shoulder and hip drop into the cushion while the coils keep the waist from following
  • Roughly half the price of the Glenshaw above for the same traditional build, which makes it the sensible entry point into a conventionally made pillowtop

What's not

  • Soft is the firmness that ages worst on a one-sided bed - a plush top compresses where you lie and you cannot flip it to even that out
  • Not the Posturepedic line, so the coil system is a step down from the Glenshaw and the listing does not detail it
  • Heavier back sleepers, and anyone over roughly 230 pounds, will likely find a soft pillowtop lets the hips drop too far, which is the opposite of what a bad back needs

Sweetnight Sweetnight CoolNest 14-Inch Hybrid Queen Mattress, Cooling Pillow Top, Medium Firm

6. Best for Hot sleepers - the pick that treats heat as the main problem

  • 14 inches tall (as listed)
  • Cooling pillow top, hybrid (as listed)
  • Medium firm (as listed)
  • 7-zone ergonomic support (as listed)
  • 4-stage enhanced breathability (as listed)

What's good

  • Cooling built into the plush layer rather than only the cover is the right place for it - a cool-to-touch cover under a thick cushion stops helping about twenty minutes in
  • Zoned support plus medium firm is the combination that keeps a cooling pillow top from becoming a heat trap with a sag in the middle
  • The most specified of the budget-to-mid hybrids here: firmness, zone count and the breathability design are all stated rather than left to adjectives

What's not

  • Cooling claims on any mattress are relative, not absolute - no pillow top sleeps as cool as a thin, firm, breathable bed, and this will still be the warmest kind of mattress in the room
  • Stock on this listing moves (it was showing limited quantity when we resolved it), so size and color availability may be narrower than the brand's other models

Novilla Queen Mattress, 12-Inch Hybrid with Innerspring Pillow Top

The budget floor of this shelf, and the only pick at the bottom of the price range that both says pillow top and says innerspring, which is the combination that stops a cheap plush bed from being a slab of soft foam with a quilted cover. CertiPUR-US certified, and at 12 inches it is the one mattress here that works with sheets you already own.

Key specs

  • 12 inches tall (as listed)
  • Hybrid: comfort foam over innerspring (as listed)
  • Innerspring pillow top (as listed)
  • Soft feel but supportive (as listed)
  • CertiPUR-US certified (as listed)

What's good

  • 12 inches is the practical height on this page - standard fitted sheets fit it, a platform bed does not become absurdly tall, and a protector still zips on
  • A coil unit at this price is genuinely unusual; the cheap alternative is all-foam with a quilted top, which flattens far faster
  • The lowest-risk way to find out whether you like a plush surface at all before committing to a Sealy

What's not

  • Soft feel plus 12 inches plus a budget coil unit is the combination least suited to heavier sleepers - there is simply less material between you and the springs
  • No published firmness level or coil specification, so the only firmness information is the seller's own adjective
  • The thinnest pillow top here, which is why it is the cheapest - the plush layer has less to compress and less longevity in it

Common questions

How long does a pillow top mattress last?

Expect the plush top to change character well before the mattress fails. The coil unit or foam core under it has the same lifespan as any other mattress of the same quality - roughly seven to ten years for a mid-range bed - but the cushion is a thick, soft, unsupported layer of fill, and fill compresses where a body lies on it. On a one-sided pillowtop, which is almost all of them, you cannot flip the bed to even that out. Rotating it head to foot every three to six months is the only thing that spreads the wear, and it genuinely helps. What you should not expect is for the surface to feel the way it did in month one at year five. If you want a plush surface you can actually renew, a firm mattress plus a replaceable topper does that and a pillowtop does not.

Is a pillow top mattress good for back pain?

It depends entirely on what is under the cushion, which is why the construction matters more than the word. A plush top over a firm, zoned support core can be very good: the cushion takes pressure off the shoulder and hip while the core keeps the lumbar spine from dropping. A plush top over a soft core is usually worse, because both layers give at once and the pelvis sinks out of alignment. That is the whole reason the firm pillowtop pick on this page exists, and why it is scarce - most manufacturers pair plush with plush. Our guide on whether a firm or soft mattress is better for back pain covers how to tell which side of that line you are on, and the dedicated back pain roundup ranks beds chosen for it specifically.

Do I need deep pocket sheets for a pillow top mattress?

Almost certainly, yes. A pillow top adds two to four inches on top of an already normal mattress height, and most of the beds on this page are 13 to 15 inches before you add a protector or a mattress pad. Standard fitted sheets are cut for pockets of around 12 inches and will either refuse to reach the corners or snap off one of them in the night. Measure the mattress from the base of the side panel to the top of the cushion, add an inch for a protector, and buy a pocket depth above that number. Our deep pocket sheets roundup and the bed sheet sizes guide both cover how depth is labeled, which is inconsistent between brands.

What is the difference between a pillow top and a euro top?

Where the cushion is attached. A pillow top is stitched onto the top of the mattress as a separate pad, so there is a visible seam and a slight inset at the edge, and the cushion looks like a pillow sitting on the bed. A euro top is tucked inside the mattress border so the surface runs flush to the edge. The practical differences are that a euro top usually feels slightly firmer and more uniform, holds its shape better at the perimeter, and looks tidier under sheets, while a pillow top feels softer and more distinctly cushioned in the middle. Our pillow top versus euro top guide works through which feel suits which sleeper, including why several beds sold as pillow tops are built as euro tops.

Can you put a mattress topper on a pillow top mattress?

You can, and it is usually the wrong fix. A topper on top of a pillow top stacks two soft, unsupported layers, which is how a bed stops holding anyone's spine in place - and it adds another two to four inches to a mattress that is already fighting your fitted sheets. The one case where it makes sense is a pillowtop that has developed a shallow body impression on one side and is otherwise structurally fine: a firm topper can bridge that for a while. If the bed is too soft generally, the answer is a firmer mattress rather than a firmer layer on a soft one. Our topper guide and the sagging mattress guide both cover what a topper can and cannot rescue.
