The Best Jersey Sheets

Buy the Amazon Basics 100% cotton jersey set. It is the one in this group that publishes both its fiber content and a deep pocket, which are the only two specs on a knit sheet that predict anything. Four more below for a cheaper everyday set, a tall mattress, a cotton blend that resists wrinkles, and a fitted sheet on its own.

Amazon Basics Amazon Basics 100% Cotton Jersey Knit Sheet Set, Deep Pockets

Amazon Basics 100% Cotton Jersey Knit Sheet Set, Deep Pockets

The sensible default. It is listed as 100% cotton jersey with deep pockets, which is the full set of facts you actually need from a knit sheet, and Amazon Basics bedding is the most returnable thing on this shelf if the color is wrong. Nothing exciting, which on a sheet you sleep on 300 nights a year is the point.

Utopia Bedding Jersey Knit Sheets, 4 Piece, Cotton T-Shirt Feel

The everyday pick, and the one to buy for a guest room or a kid's bed where sheets get replaced rather than repaired. Utopia sells this in a wide spread of colors, states a stretchable knit and a secure fit, and prices it where you will not resent it when the fitted sheet eventually goes thin.

PURE ERA PURE ERA Jersey Knit Sheet Set, 100% Cotton, Fits Mattresses Up to 20 in

PURE ERA Jersey Knit Sheet Set, 100% Cotton, Fits Mattresses Up to 20 in

The one to buy if your bed is deep. It is the only set here that publishes both 100% cotton and a specific maximum mattress depth - 20 inches - with elastic all around rather than just at the corners. That combination is what keeps a knit fitted sheet on a tall mattress instead of creeping off it by morning.

Intelligent Design Intelligent Design Cotton Blend Jersey Knit Sheet Set, 14 in Deep Pocket

Intelligent Design Cotton Blend Jersey Knit Sheet Set, 14 in Deep Pocket

The blend pick, chosen deliberately rather than by accident. A cotton-polyester jersey wrinkles less, dries faster and holds a bright dye far better than pure cotton does - real advantages if your sheets go straight from the dryer to the bed. You trade some breathability for all of it, and the listing is honest about being a blend.

N&Y HOME N&Y HOME Stretch Jersey Knit Fitted Sheet Only, 4-Way Stretch

N&Y HOME Stretch Jersey Knit Fitted Sheet Only, 4-Way Stretch

The practical purchase almost nobody makes: just the fitted sheet. The fitted sheet is the piece that dies first on every set in your closet, and buying one on its own in a 4-way stretch knit costs a fraction of replacing the set. It is also the pick for an RV or a split mattress, where standard sizes do not fit.

Jersey is knitted, so every sheet spec you know stops applying

A woven sheet is a grid: warp threads under tension, weft threads crossing them. That grid is why percale is crisp, why sateen is smooth, and why thread count exists as a number at all — you can count the threads in a square inch because they run in straight lines.

Jersey has no grid. It is a single yarn looped through itself, the same construction as the T-shirt you are probably wearing. Loops stretch, so the fabric gives in every direction; loops hold air, so it feels warm rather than cool; loops have no tension to crease, so it barely wrinkles. And because there are no crossing threads, thread count is not a specification a jersey sheet can have. If you see one quoted on a knit listing, it was invented for the marketing copy.

That is the whole reason this page exists separately from the percale, sateen and cotton pages. The usual sheet-buying framework — count the threads, check the weave, feel for crispness — has nothing to grip on here. Two specs replace it.

The two specs that actually predict a jersey sheet

  • Fiber content, stated as a percentage. This is the whole decision. 100% cotton jersey is breathable warmth: it absorbs moisture and moves it away from you, so the cozy feeling stays comfortable. A cotton-polyester jersey is cheaper, wrinkles less and holds color far longer, but polyester does not absorb moisture, so the same warmth turns damp if you sweat. Watch the wording: "cotton T-shirt feel" is a description of how it feels, not a statement of what it is made of. Only a percentage counts.
  • Stated pocket depth, in inches. Because a knit stretches, sellers get away with publishing nothing at all here — the sheet will go on almost any mattress. The problem is what happens afterwards: a fitted sheet stretched to its limit is under constant tension, so it pops off the foot of the bed in the night and it stretches out permanently much faster. Measure your mattress with the protector and topper on it and buy a couple of inches more than that.

Fabric weight in GSM would be the useful third number — it separates a light summer jersey from a heavy winter one — but almost nobody on this shelf publishes it. What GSM means and why it is worth looking for is a separate page.

How the five compare, from the listings

Stated fiber content, pocket depth, pieces included and elastic type for each pick, as published on its Amazon listing.

PURE ERA100% cottonUp to 20 in4All around

Two of the five publish a fiber percentage and two publish a usable depth, and only one publishes both. That is the ranking: the sets that tell you what they are and how deep they go sit above the sets that ask you to find out at home.

Who jersey sheets are right for

There is a specific person these are correct for, and it is not everyone. Jersey suits you if you want a bed that feels soft the first night with no break-in, if you make the bed straight out of the dryer and want it to look made, if your bedroom runs cool, or if you are buying for a kid's bed where stretch forgives a hurried job. It is also the easiest sheet in the world to live with: no ironing, no wrinkles to apologise for, nothing to go wrong.

It is wrong for you if you want the cool, crisp, slightly starchy feel of a good hotel bed — that is percale, and no knit will ever do it. It is wrong if you sleep hot, because the looped structure is working against you. And it is wrong if you want sheets that last a decade; a knit wears at the stretch points and a woven sheet does not.

What a year of washing does to a knit

The two things that end a jersey sheet are pilling and permanent stretch, and both are mostly about heat and friction. Pills form where the fabric rubs — under your hips first — and once they are there, they stay. Permanent stretch comes from hot water and hot dryers shrinking and then relaxing the loops, which is how a fitted sheet that gripped the mattress in March is loose by November.

Both are slowed by the same habits: cold or warm wash, gentle cycle, low dryer heat, out of the drum slightly damp, no fabric softener, and never in the same load as towels or zippers. The full washing routine is here. If the fitted sheet has already stretched past the point of gripping, the cheap fix is not a new set — straps and grippers solve it for a few dollars.

About the prices on this page

We do not type prices into pages. Each button carries a figure read from the live listing by our own price check, stamped with the date it last ran. Jersey sets in particular are priced per size and per color on the same listing — a navy queen and a white king can be twenty dollars apart — so confirm the variant you have selected before you check out.

What we will not tell you

We have not slept on these five sets, we have no test lab, and we are not going to invent a softness score for a fabric we have never had against our skin. The ranking is built on what each listing publishes — fiber content, pocket depth, elastic construction, pieces included — and on the mechanical consequences of a knitted structure: loops stretch, loops trap air, loops pill, and polyester does not absorb moisture. Where a listing declines to state what the fabric is made of, we have said so and marked it down for it. Our full method is here.

Key specs

  • 100% cotton jersey knit (as listed)
  • 4-piece set: flat, fitted, pillowcase (as listed)
  • Deep pockets (as listed)
  • Queen, Oatmeal (as listed)
  • Machine washable (as listed)

What's good

  • 100% cotton rather than a poly blend, which is the single spec that decides whether a jersey sheet breathes or holds your body heat against you
  • Deep pockets are stated on the listing - most jersey sets say nothing about depth and leave you to find out whether the corners reach
  • Amazon Basics bedding is a high-volume line with an easy return path, which matters on a product where the color in the photo and the color on your bed are often two different grays

What's not

  • The listing gives no fabric weight in GSM, so you cannot tell before it arrives whether this is a light summer jersey or a heavier winter one
  • Cotton jersey pills where it rubs - the fitted sheet under your hips is the first place it shows, and no amount of careful washing prevents it entirely
  • Solid oatmeal is the colorway shown; the same set is listed in other colors at other prices, so check you are buying the one you looked at

Skip this one if

You want a crisp, cool, hotel-feeling bed. Jersey is the opposite of crisp by construction, and a percale set will give you that for similar money.

Utopia Bedding Utopia Bedding Jersey Knit Sheets, 4 Piece, Cotton T-Shirt Feel

Utopia Bedding Jersey Knit Sheets, 4 Piece, Cotton T-Shirt Feel

Key specs

  • Jersey knit, cotton T-shirt feel (as listed)
  • 4-piece set (as listed)
  • Queen, Navy (as listed)
  • Stretchable, secure fit (as listed)
  • Wrinkle resistant, all-season (as listed)

What's good

  • Priced low enough to be a consumable rather than an investment, which is the right way to buy a knit sheet - they wear out at the stretch points no matter what you pay
  • Navy and the other dark colorways hide the fading and marking that make a pale jersey sheet look tired well before it is worn out
  • Utopia Bedding has a deep bedding catalog and sells this set across every common size, so replacing one piece later is realistic

What's not

  • The listing says cotton T-shirt feel rather than 100% cotton - a feel claim is not a fiber claim, and on this shelf that wording usually means a blend
  • No stated pocket depth and no stated weight, so fit on a thick mattress or a topper is a gamble
  • Low-cost jersey is thinner jersey: it is the set most likely to go translucent at the hips inside a couple of years of weekly washing

Skip this one if

Your mattress is over about 14 inches with a topper on it. Nothing on this listing promises the corners will reach, and a knit sheet that is fighting the mattress pulls off at the foot.

PURE ERA PURE ERA Jersey Knit Sheet Set, 100% Cotton, Fits Mattresses Up to 20 in

3. Best for Thick mattresses, toppers and tall beds

Key specs

  • 100% cotton jersey knit (as listed)
  • 4-piece set (as listed)
  • Fits mattresses up to 20 in deep (as listed)
  • All-around elastic (as listed)
  • Queen, Heather Beige (as listed)

What's good

  • A published depth limit in inches is the rarest useful number on this shelf, and 20 inches covers almost any mattress plus a topper
  • All-around elastic rather than corner-only elastic is what actually holds a stretchy knit sheet in position - corner elastic lets the middle ride up
  • 100% cotton is stated outright, not implied by a feel claim

What's not

  • The most expensive set on this page by a wide margin, and the premium buys fit rather than any stated improvement in the fabric itself
  • A sheet cut for a 20-inch mattress is baggy on a slim one: on an 8-inch bed the excess fabric bunches under you
  • Heather colorways on cotton jersey show lint and pet hair more than solids do

Skip this one if

Your mattress is thin and you have no topper. You would be paying extra for depth you then have to tuck away.

Intelligent Design Intelligent Design Cotton Blend Jersey Knit Sheet Set, 14 in Deep Pocket

4. Best for Wrinkle resistance, and a color that is not a neutral

Key specs

  • Cotton blend jersey knit (as listed)
  • 4-piece set (as listed)
  • 14 in deep pocket fitted sheet (as listed)
  • Queen, Purple (as listed)
  • All-season (as listed)

What's good

  • States the pocket depth as a number - 14 inches - which is enough for most mattresses without a topper
  • A blend is the right choice if you dislike ironing and never iron: polyester content is why it comes out of the dryer looking made rather than crumpled
  • Strong color range, and blends hold saturated dyes through many more washes than cotton jersey does before going chalky

What's not

  • Polyester content means it breathes less than the 100% cotton sets here - if you sleep hot, this is the wrong direction on a fabric that is already cozy by nature
  • The listing does not state the blend ratio, so cotton blend could be anything from mostly cotton to mostly polyester
  • Synthetic fibers hold body oils more stubbornly than cotton, which is how a blend sheet starts to smell faintly before it looks dirty

Skip this one if

You are a hot sleeper or you specifically wanted a natural-fiber bed. The breathability loss on a blend jersey is the whole reason to read the fiber line.

N&Y HOME N&Y HOME Stretch Jersey Knit Fitted Sheet Only, 4-Way Stretch

5. Best for Replacing one worn fitted sheet, RV and odd-size mattresses

Key specs

  • Jersey knit, fitted sheet only (as listed)
  • 4-way stretch (as listed)
  • Fits King and Cal standard / RV mattress (as listed)
  • Deep pocket 5 in - 13 in (as listed)
  • King, Dark Gray (as listed)

What's good

  • A stated pocket range rather than a single number - 5 to 13 inches - which is what you need when the mattress is not a standard thickness
  • 4-way stretch is the reason this fits awkward sizes at all: it stretches on both axes instead of relying on the cut being right
  • Buying the fitted sheet alone is the cheapest honest fix for the one piece of a set that always fails first

What's not

  • It is one sheet - no flat sheet, no pillowcases - so as a first purchase it leaves you shopping again
  • Matching a dark gray fitted sheet to the rest of your bedding is luck, which is why the dark neutral is the sensible color to buy
  • The listing does not state fiber content, so this is bought on fit and stretch rather than on what it is made of

You need a complete set. This is a spare-part purchase and it is priced like one.

Common questions

What are jersey sheets?

Jersey sheets are knitted, not woven - the same construction as a cotton T-shirt. Every other sheet in your closet is almost certainly woven: threads crossing at right angles under tension, which is what gives percale its crispness and sateen its sheen. A knit is made of interlocking loops instead, and loops stretch. That one structural difference explains everything about how jersey behaves: it is soft immediately with no break-in period, it stretches over the mattress instead of being cut to fit it, it is warmer than a woven sheet of the same weight because the looped surface traps air, and it wrinkles far less because there is no tensioned grid to crease. It is also why thread count does not appear on a jersey listing: there is no thread count to quote on a knit.

Do jersey sheets sleep hot?

Warmer than percale, cooler than flannel, and the fiber matters more than the knit. The looped structure of a jersey holds air against you, which is why the fabric feels cozy the moment you get in rather than cool. In 100% cotton that warmth is breathable - moisture moves out through the fiber - so most people find cotton jersey comfortable year-round. In a cotton-polyester blend it is a different story: the synthetic does not absorb moisture, so the warmth turns clammy if you sweat. If you sleep hot and still want jersey, buy 100% cotton and buy the lightest weight you can find. If you sleep very hot, buy percale instead.

Do jersey sheets pill?

Yes, and it is the honest weakness of the category. Pilling is loose fiber ends balling up where fabric rubs, and a knit has more surface available to rub than a tight weave does. On jersey sheets it shows up first on the fitted sheet under your hips and shoulders, usually inside the first year. Short-staple cotton pills faster than long-staple; blends pill in a different way, where the polyester holds the pill in place so it never brushes off. You can slow it down - wash cool, skip fabric softener, dry on low, do not overload the drum - but no jersey sheet stays smooth forever. Price it in: these are sheets to replace, not sheets to inherit.

What pocket depth do I need for jersey sheets?

Measure your mattress with the topper and protector on it, then buy a stated depth at least two inches greater. Jersey hides this problem better than a woven sheet does, because the knit stretches to cover a mattress it was not cut for - but a sheet that is stretched to its limit is a sheet under permanent tension, and tension is what pulls the corners off the foot of the bed at 3am. It also accelerates the stretching-out that ends a knit sheet's life. Two of the picks above publish a usable number (14 inches, and up to 20 inches); where a listing publishes nothing, assume standard depth of around 12 inches and do not buy it for a tall bed.

Jersey or flannel for winter?

Flannel is warmer; jersey is warm and much less work. Flannel gets its heat from a brushed nap raised on a woven base, which traps a thick layer of still air - genuinely warmer than jersey, and the right answer for a cold bedroom. The trade is that flannel sheds lint heavily for the first several washes and pills across the whole surface over a few seasons. Jersey is a middling warmth you can leave on the bed in spring without roasting, and it is the one sheet type that comes out of the dryer looking acceptable without any effort. We have a separate page for each; if your bedroom is genuinely cold, read the flannel one.

How should I wash jersey sheets?

Cold or warm water, gentle or normal cycle, low heat in the dryer, and take them out while they are still barely damp. The failure mode for a knit is heat: hot water and a hot dryer shrink the loops, which is what turns a fitted sheet that reached the corners into one that does not. Skip fabric softener entirely - it coats cotton fiber, reduces absorbency and makes pilling worse, and a jersey sheet does not need softening in the first place. Do not wash sheets with towels or anything with a zipper; abrasion is the whole mechanism of pilling. Line drying is better than any dryer setting if you have the space.
